When Jena Covello was diagnosed with endometriosis and adenomyosis at age 23, she set out on a path that would dramatically change the course of her life. After years of pain, five surgeries, and countless differing opinions from Western doctors, Jena put her trust in a holistic practitioner and began educating herself on natural medicine and healing remedies.

This whole thing started on account of all the beeswax.Burt Shavitz and Roxanne Quimby created Burt’s Bees in the early 1980s. In their former lives, Burt worked as a photojournalist in Manhattan, and Roxanne was an artist living in San Francisco. Each left behind the harried pace of city life to seek—and eventually find—freedom in the remote, pristine wilderness of Maine.

Burt settled into a new life as the local “bee man” after finding a stray beehive and learning how to eke out a living selling honey. One day, Burt pulled over for a hitchhiking Roxanne in his schoolbus-yellow pickup truck, and the two hit it off. Burt was a resourceful guy; he’d been stowing away the surplus beeswax from his honey business, knowing it might eventually come in handy. Burt taught Roxanne about his bees, and she found a book of recipes which they used to turn their waxy bounty into things like candles (in 1984) and lip balm (in 1991—that one turned out to be a keeper).

Burt and Roxanne valued the simple life, and knew the importance and personal worth of staying connected to nature. Their lifestyle was low-impact, and socially and environmentally conscious. As back-to-basics, D-I-Y types, they were ahead of their time—their approach is as compelling now as ever.

Roxanne used to say that since we take from nature, we must respect and preserve it. Today, we follow in her and Burt’s footsteps by using the best ingredients from nature, and in turn respecting nature so we can all live well.

BACK TO THE LANDAfter selling her stake in Burt’s Bees, Roxanne began working to safeguard our wild spaces for generations to come. She started a philanthropic foundation, gave $90 million to charities, and bought over 87,000 acres of pristine Maine woodland that she then donated to the National Park Service. Consider this her standing invitation to get out there and explore.

BURT’S SIMPLE LIFE
When Burt left New York City, being surrounded by nature (including his bees and beloved golden retrievers) and living with less was his goal. He realized it by converting this 300-square-foot turkey coop into a cozy cabin home. (Who needs heat or electricity with those views?) It was his favorite place to be; he spent his last years on that land. After his passing, the cabin was moved from Maine to our Durham headquarters, so visitors can see just how freeing a downsized life can be.

We started melting and mixing beeswax in a ramshackle kitchen in Maine, grew into an abandoned schoolhouse, upgraded to bowling alley and finally pulled up stakes and headed south to North Carolina, where we settled into our current home—a former tobacco warehouse in the heart of downtown Durham.

Francesco Clark was 24 years old with a promising career at Harper’s Bazaar when his entire world was turned upside-down. On June 1, 2002, Francesco dove headfirst into a swimming pool and crashed into the bottom. He became paralyzed from the neck down. Surgeons told his parents, “he will never breathe, talk or move his arms (on his own) - and forget about his legs.” 

His skin, now permanently impacted, was prone to breakouts, dry patches, and redness, creating a perfect storm of ongoing ailments. Francesco enlisted the help of his father, a medical doctor trained in homeopathy, to heal his skin. 

After five years and 78 formulations, a star was born: Jasmine Absolute, the proprietary ingredient of Clark’s Botanicals 1.0 that turned back the clock on Francesco’s prematurely aging skin. The discovery of Jasmine Absolute provided the catalyst for Francesco to adopt a daily holistic self-care regimen that changed his life. Before opening her Med Spa in Chicago, Dara decided to make dermaplaning the foundation of all services offered at her spa and trademarked DERMAFLASH® as the name of her dermaplaning facial.

Journalist, professor -and for the past 12 years- an esthetician guided by an altruistic approach. After a long-standing career of more than 15 years in journalism and media such as TV and radio, Catalina Aguirre decided to dive head first into another one of her passions: aesthetics

Upon completing her studies in Cosmetology, Catalina began her work alongside one of the leaders and pioneers of Chilean aesthetic medicine, Dr. Carmen Moren, where she rapidly became interested in the science behind cosmetology. In 2017 Catalina created KUMIKO; a line of dermocosmetic products developed in Barcelona, Spain, using Japanese matcha tea, combined with mesotherapy and vector technology to work the skin from the inside out. The line entered the Chilean market in 2018 at the same time in US.

When I started Pacifica 25 years ago, it wasn’t because I was like: there aren’t any brands that work for me. It was that I was not seeing brands that aligned with my values AND were effective at the same time. I thought my goal was a simple one: create products using natural ingredients that were vegan and minimized the use of petrochemicals. It turns out this is actually really hard, especially before suppliers caught up to consumers. I had to learn a lot about sustainability, naturals, our dependance on industrial farming and the petrochemical industry. I’m proud to say 25 years later that we’ve stayed firm on our mission of leading with compassion for the planet, animals and you – always being cruelty-free & vegan, continuing to challenge ourselves and the beauty industry on sustainable packaging, developing with clean, naturally-derived and effective ingredients, and having a positive impact (social justice, etc…)

Sweet Chef was inspired by all things natural, healthy, and fresh-pressed. Whether it is a green juice or a protein-packed salad, vegetables are one of the best ways to nourish and detoxify your body and skin.

Made in Korea and inspired by the popular K-Beauty trend of layering serums aka ‘double-seruming’, the brand launched with three different plant and vitamin Serum Shots along with selfie-ready Fresh Pressed Sheet Masks, and now have a variety of veggie and vitamin-packed products. 

We're also proud to announce that Sweet Chef is now Leaping Bunny certified! What does that mean? It means we don't conduct or participate in any animal testing. Our products and our entire supply chain has been vetted by Leaping Bunny, and is guaranteed to be 100% free of new animal testing.

For us, clean tanning means creating products that are innovative in formulation, application and end-result.

Good-for-you ingredients make our products great for you, and we work to ensure full traceability of everything that goes into each and every product we make. If we aren’t totally obsessed with what we’re creating, then we don’t do it. It’s that simple.

We don’t believe in colour guides (the dark stain used in traditional self-tanning products). These synthetic dyes have been tested to break down tanning actives and cause streaking, uneven fading, clogged pores and skin dehydration.

That’s why we’ve developed colour free, crystal clear formulations that deliver amazing results every single time. No Streaks, No Smells, No drama.
