Because appealing to the cleansers is a powder, we were able to develop it to be used in three ways, as a cleanser, exfoliator, and a mask. It's formulated to exfoliate without being abrasive or causing micro-tears. Micro-tears are invisible cuts on the skin that gradually weaken the skin's barrier, making it prone to dryness, redness, and irritation. Making a powder cleanser allows us to provide a 100% active formula. Typical cleansers contain at least 80% water, which not only means most of your money is paying for water, but these cleansers have bigger carbon footprints and contribute to water scarcity. Not all formulas can be waterless, but it's important to us that we formulate without water whenever possible.

I'm Hana, co-founder and CEO of Variant, and today I'm taking you way behind the scenes to show you how our Mellow Moisturizer Steady As You Glow gets made. Steady As You Glow is an emulsion, meaning a stable mixture of oils and waters. All of the lipids and oil-soluble ingredients go into this kettle to melt and combine. Meanwhile, all of the water and water-soluble ingredients go into this kettle. Time to make the emulsion! The oil phase is slowly added to the water phase, and the new combination starts to thicken. It becomes the texture of whipped frosting. Oh yeah, she's thick! The kettles have pretty cool tech that makes sure the mixtures are consistent. A pump pulls the mixture from the bottom of the kettle back to the top in a constant flow, while machines called homogenizers blend away. After lots more blending, you can see the moisturizer start to come to life in all of its smooth, glossy glory. But we've got one more step. Aw yeah, in goes our blue gardenia extract that gives Steady As You Glow its baby blue color. I'm going to show you how the batch gets filled.

Hey, it's Hannah, and this is part two of showing you how Steady As You Glow gets made. So if you haven't seen part one, go back and watch that first. First things first, the jars are labeled and then arrive here at the filling line. A staff member holds each jar under the filler, which jostles out the right amount of formula. To make sure each jar always gets at least 50 grams of formula, a jar from the beginning, middle, and end of the line is pulled every 15 minutes to be weighed. The filled jars continue down the line where caps are applied by hand. Aluminum caps can dent when applied by a machine, but tightening by hand keeps them in perfect condition. The bottoms of the jars get a lock code lasered on as they run through this belt. The boxes, we call them unit cartons, also get the same lock code stamped on them. And lastly, the completed units are loaded into master cases before they're stacked onto pallets and shipped to our warehouse, and from there, they'll be ready to ship to you.
