Our Story Over my 15-year salon career beginning at a tiny shop in Lexington Kentucky, it was an honor to be trusted by hundreds of clients, to have opportunities to train in advanced techniques in color and cutting at London’s Vidal Sassoon’s, experienced the challenges and joys of running an underground salon in Saudi Arabia, and eventually hairdressing at a high-end Portland, Oregon salon. Feeling pulled by the responsibilities of motherhood, I stepped away from the salon to care for my grade school children. Fully confident that I was more than qualified to color my own hair at home, I stepped into the bathroom and soon turned my healthy hair into straw, over-processing with squirt bottle applicators that were slow and messy. Instead of feeling confident and enjoying a moment of personal care, I quickly began to dread the entire process. Knowing firsthand the power of beauty and transformation, and now (more humbly) realizing how challenging self-application truly was, my vision was to create an applicator that would advance a better outcome, open accessibility no matter the setting, solve the mobility and control problems caused by common dye bottles and bring greater ease and enjoyment to this self-care experience. It’s been quite a journey to create The Hummingbird, full of challenges, but worth every up and down to be able to offer it to others. I’m still coloring my hair at home -Kathryn Madison, Founder & CEO The Hummingbird is self-financed and was launched in 2022 after years of testing and development. It has been granted patents both in the US and Europe and is now used both at home and in the salon. Giving and Mission Dye Candy is woman owned and gives back through its 1% For the Birds campaign, donating 1% of sales to the Audubon Society, an amazing organization that protects birds in the Americas. We design useful re-usable tools, made to last, as an alternative to single use plastics.
