When Spoolies curlers were first created in the 1950s, they were introduced as a novel way to create pin curls and ringlets instead of using bobby pins, which were uncomfortable and would slip out of the hair. In those days, it was a tradition for mothers, daughters, and grandmothers to gather together on Saturday night for an evening of telling stories, sharing experiences and getting ready for church the next morning.
