KateHome & Garden #ClipsWorking with the dream team real_simple is something I am beyond grateful for Ever since I was a little girl I ve dreamed of owning a Brooklyn Brownstone Time will tell whether that dream will ever come true but having the opportunity to renovate the cellar of this incredible 1890s brownstone in Crown Heights for the Real Simple Home 2024 has been a highlight of my career The task at hand was to turn this place from disrepair to swanky speakeasy and I was only able to do such a thing with an incredible team behind me A huge thank you to everyone real_simple and especially mmchandler05 ericafinamore hannahbaker86 - I don t know how you all do what you do but it is beyond impressive A big thanks to dahill_designer_brownstone for letting me dream up this speakeasy in his basement slather his walls in brown and for placing trust

KateHome & Garden #ClipsEveryone gets a bit hung up about gallery walls but I m going to give you some tips because I promise it doesn t have to be so hard 1 Don t match frames This feels flat and including different frames creates interest and dimension It s ok to make them all gold or all black but if going with a single color palette I would still add varying shades of these colors and different styles of frames 2 Sometimes it s fun to go with a theme almost all portraits on one wall silhouettes on another etc but this is also totally not necessary The thing that makes gallery walls so fun is including the unexpected so it doesn t just feel like a massive grouping of a bunch of the same

KateHome & Garden #ClipsYes we tackle projects one after the other because it s my f u l l -time job But everything that truly makes our house a home These vintage and antique pieces have been amassed over DECADES I take my time thrift very often but wait for the right pieces at the right prices And so many rooms take many months and even years to really come together Creating a home is a marathon not a sprint And it s a marathon that never ends really It s all about enjoying the process Also a big shoutout to Billy for making this Mother s Day extra special He haggled at an estate sale to add a few more special pieces to my collection helped me hang them in spots I couldn t reach and overall has just made this the best Mother s Day spent doing what I love most.

KateHome & Garden #ClipsI think the part that gets me the most about this audio is the part about how we ve encouraged people to feel temporary I have lots of thoughts on this topic but I d also like to address the well what are you moving out like tomorrow part Our last home was colorful eclectic bold We had pink snake wallpaper in 1 2 bathrooms and the other one had orange tile Our house sold before it even hit the market Don t discount this idea that lots and lots and lots of people out there aren t looking for a white beige home And even if they are plenty of people don t struggle to understand that they could change it back to that with a few gallons of paint Our homes ARE sacred They should make us happy They should be a reflection of ourselves and our families.

KateHome & Garden #ClipsDo you agree? . What is it that makes you happy to be in a space? I think this is different for all of us, so I’ll go first: . 1. Good natural light 2. Warm colors 3. Soft and warm artificial lighting 4. Unique pieces from the thrift shop 5. Pattern mixing that creates depth and interest 6. Nothing feeling too precious . It also feels worth adding that the less I paid for something (applies to mostly secondhand pieces), the happier it makes me. Also, the weirder it is, the more it makes me smile, and all the bizarre ways I’ve come to acquire pieces through estate sales and auctions and thrift stores always make for the best conversations. . #thriftedhome #colorfuldecor #vintagehome #eclectichome #eclectichomemix #patternmixing #maximalism
