What it is?
Endemic to the scrub forests, jungles, and grasslands of India and southeastern Asia, the Asian elephant is the only living species of the genus Elephas (not to be confused with the family Elephantidae). They have a similar life span to humans, and can live to be over 80 years old!
What else you need to know
- History: Populations of the Asian elephant in many parts of Asia have decreased considerably due to habitat loss, habitat fragmentation, and poaching. Similarly, in India Asian elephants are only found in a few niche regions. Thankfully, they are one of the most readily and actively protected species, and experts are hopeful that their numbers can be stabilized before a repopulation plan is initiated.
- Scientific Name: Elephas Maximus
- Characteristics: Not only are Asian elephants incredibly intelligent, but they can actually exhibit a wide range of emotions.
