These three spice blends are what I consider to be the foundation of Puerto Rican cuisine and I’m so proud to share them with you! I consider introducing people to and educating them about Puerto Rico, its vibrant culture, and our flavor-packed food an important aspect of my ongoing culinary journey. Puerto Rican cuisine is a beautiful combination of West African, Spanish, and indigenous Taíno foods and cooking methods; and learning more about each of these influences has inherently shaped and strengthened my connection to my ancestors in the kitchen. Witnessing the impact that these three cultures and cuisines have had throughout the diaspora has taught me that we simply share more in common than one would think. I hope that using these blends in your kitchen will not only transport you to La Isla Bonita but help broaden your culinary outlook, inspire cooking with love and intention, and open your world to más sabor!
About The Spices
Sofrito Blend - This herbaceous and aromatic seasoning blend is a staple in the Puerto Rican kitchen and is the backbone of many of our savory dishes. I wanted to take the same bold flavors of cilantro, peppers, onions, and garlic and introduce them as a dry spice blend, for a simple way to add a punch of flavor to each of your meals. Use this blend anywhere you’d use aromatics: stews and soups, curries, rice dishes, even as a marinade for protein. When in doubt, put sofrito in it. Ingredients: Cilantro, Onion, Bell Pepper, Garlic, Coriander
Smoky Sazón Blend - Its translation comes from the Spanish verb “to season” and this spice blend doesn’t miss! A common ingredient used in Puerto Rican dishes, this blend of garlic, oregano, black pepper often gets its signature reddish-orange hue from annatto. I wanted to amp up these flavors by adding a smoky element which pairs well with any kind of protein as a rub or marinade or seasoning in various rice dishes, soups, and stews. Ingredients: Black Pepper, Garlic, Annatto, Paprika, Salt, Turmeric, Cumin, Coriander, Oregano
Black Garlic Adobo Blend - Adobo is an all-purpose seasoning blend common in Puerto Rican kitchens and I wanted to create a fun and insanely flavorful twist on this tried and true classic. By using black garlic, there’s a hint of sweetness and tangy depth to the blend of this spice cabinet workhorse. Use this in any recipe that you’d use an all-purpose seasoning blend and transform your dish into something magical with this umami-forward taste! Ingredients: Garlic, Salt, Onion, Black Pepper, Oregano, Cumin, Turmeric
