What it is?
BARRIER CULTURE uses patented technology to rebuild the topical microbiome, protect against pollution, and lock in moisture.
The replacement to your double-cleanse, this treatment cleanser deeply cleans the skin, removing dirt, pollution and makeup, without stripping or disrupting the skin’s pH.
The soap-free and sulfate-free formula actively repairs the skin barrier and replenishes the topical microbiome by using prebiotics, probiotics and postbiotics to leave your skin balanced, smooth and nourished.
Formulation
A velvety gel that transforms into a light, milky foam.
Key Benefits
DEEP CLEANING, NOT STRIPPING:
Thoroughly cleans the skin without stripping natural oils or disrupting the pH balance. The sulfate-free formula melts away makeup, dirt and pollution and leaves the skin feeling comfortable and soft.
REPOPULATES THE MICROBIOME:
The proprietary blend of prebiotics, probiotics and postbiotics rebuilds the skin's microbiome, keeping pollution and stressors out, and moisture in.
PH FRIENDLY:
The low pH cleanser (pH 5) matches the naturally slightly acidic pH of healthy skin (around pH 4.5-5). Unlike most foaming or wash-off cleansers, it doesn’t push the skin into an alkaline state which can cause breakouts, sensitivity and irritation.
Skincare Concerns
Breakout-prone, Dryness, Dullness
What else you need to know
BARRIER CULTURE’s circular approach to addressing skin and environmental health in tandem enables us to reduce skincare consumption while seeing real results.
Overly complex beauty routines are doing two things; driving over 95 billion units of packaging to landfills each year, a significant contributor to air pollution, while also destroying our skin barrier.
Over 90% of skin conditions can be traced back to an impaired skin barrier, the skin’s natural immune system responsible for defending against pollution, UV light, infection and locking in hydration. BARRIER CULTURE CLEANSER is designed to protect and repair your skin’s natural barrier function, as well as replenish your topical microbiome. Your skin is home to trillions of microbes (bacteria) which perform a symbiotic function on our skin barrier, helping to maintain pH balance and protect the skin. Of the trillions of bacteria making up your microbiome it’s estimated that 26% of that is found in your gut, while 21% is found on your skin.
Much like our gut, everyday stressors actively impair our skin’s microbiome and barrier. This includes pollution, stress and over washing, with the main culprit being the overloading of active ingredients on the skin.
Most cleansers are too harsh for the skin as they use surfactants (foaming agents) to strip the oil from the skin, leaving it tight, dehydrated and imbalanced. Our skin is naturally slightly acidic (around pH 4.5) but foaming cleansers are usually very alkaline (around pH 7 or 8) which creates a breeding ground for pathogenic bacteria, upsetting our topical microbiome.
BARRIER CULTURE CLEANSER uses sulfate- and soap-free, gentle and biodegradable cleansing agents derived from apples to clean the skin without stripping or irritating it. The formula actively repairs the skin barrier and replenishes the topical microbiome using our proprietary blend of prebiotics, probiotics and postbiotics.
Prebiotics feed the good bacteria on the skin.
Probiotics help to repopulate levels of good bacteria on the skin.
Postbiotics treat the skin, actively calming and conditioning.
The probiotic in BARRIER CULTURE CLEANSER is a patented format developed in one of the leading probiotic research centers globally. Unlike living bacteria which is hard to stabilize or maintain or pasteurized bacteria that doesn’t perform any action on the skin, the format we use is both viable and stable. Our Lactobacillus Plantarum extract is the first processed probiotic with an intact cell wall, allowing it to deliver the full specific properties of the live bacteria though it is technically inert.
The patented technology in Barrier Culture Cleanser is clinically proven to reduce particulate matter (pollution) induced skin barrier damage by 45% in three days (ex vivo) and improve skin moisturisation by visibly reducing skin dryness and decreasing TEWL (trans-epidermal water loss) by 6.5% in 42 days (in vivo).
