If you’ve ever had a hangnail or other cuticle damage, you know just how painful the experience can be. After all, you need to use your hands while that skin heals. Small tears or dry skin along your cuticles make daily tasks like typing, cooking, or washing your hands very uncomfortable.

The cuticle is a small layer of skin at the base of your nail that protects it from bacteria as it grows. Despite this important job, your cuticle is quite delicate. Your cuticles take a lot of damage from the heat, cold, handwashing, lotions, and anything else you expose your hands to each day.

The best way to avoid this discomfort is to improve your nail care routine. Healthy, strong nails and cuticles are much less prone to damage (plus, they make your hands look nicer). A great way to soften cuticles and protect them from harm is to use the best cuticle oil you can find.

We’re big fans of cuticle oil here at Flip. This beauty product both protects damaged cuticles while they heal and nourishes skin for softer, more beautiful nails and hands. Here are a few of our favorite products to help with your nail care.

FAQ

How should I use cuticle oils?

Applying cuticle oil is a relatively simple process. Use a dropper, brush, or rollerball to put the oil on your skin. A small drop on the base of each nail is plenty, so don’t overdo it. Then, massage the oil into your nails and the surrounding skin (all the way down to your top knuckle). Your cuticles will get all the protection and nourishment they need.

Because it’s so easy to apply cuticle oil, it can be tempting to reapply often. It takes 2-3 hours for your skin to fully absorb cuticle oil, so reapplying every few hours ensures your cuticles are always protected.

If your nails aren’t too damaged, we don’t recommend reapplying often, as this new habit may upset your natural moisture balance. We also don’t recommend applying cuticle oil before you get a manicure. The oil can make it hard for your nail polish to adhere to your nail, which may spoil your favorite (and likely expensive) nail art.

What’s the best oil to use on cuticles?

Most cuticle oils contain the ingredients your nails need to be healthy and strong (even DIY cuticle oils, if they have hydrating ingredients like avocado, mango, or jojoba oil). Just look for the oil that meets your specific beauty needs.

Looking for something easy to use on the go? You’ll want cuticle oil in a pen or rollerball form. Do you want your oil to encourage nail growth? Look for an oil that contains vitamin E. Want your oil to smell great? Fall in love with scented oil.

What are the benefits of using cuticle oil?

You might be wondering, “What does cuticle oil do?” The answer is quite a lot — and all the cuticle oil benefits are reasons to make it a part of your cuticle care routine.

First, cuticle oils help protect your cuticle from the elements, other beauty products, and anything else that could damage the skin. This is very important as it ensures that your cuticles and nails are healthy.

Second, some cuticle oil increases circulation around your nails. This helps stimulate nail growth, which is excellent for anyone who wants longer, stronger nails.

Finally, most cuticle oils contain moisturizing ingredients that improve the overall look of your skin and nails. When you use cuticle oil regularly, you’ll notice that your nails look shinier and your cuticles look softer.
